As I have talked with many growers throughout the country, one questions that continues to come up in conversation is “are you a farm management company?” With no hesitation, the answer is quickly “not at all.” Although there are times where a landowners’ work with a farm management company may be beneficial, but that may not always be the case. For the most part, many of the duties that can be accomplished through a farm manager can be also be achieved if you are working with a good quality tenant. You as the tenant play the leadership role with the landowner. If you are doing your job and managing your operation well, you have all the information necessary to report back to the landowner even in a crop share situation. Many of the duties are performed at a considerable cost to the landowner but to many landowners, this is like pushing the easy button.
What can you as a grower offer to the landowner? Farmers are some of the most business-minded people there are. Whether it is accounting, bookkeeping, taxes, data management, cropping plans, nutrient management plans, land-use efficiency or livestock and timber management, just to name a few, can be achieved with the right tenant. Many of these details you as the grower are doing on your own business already. Why can’t you do it for a landowner needing these types of services? The answer is you can and many of you are already. Who knows the land better than you the one who is or will farm it? Who is equipped to make management decisions on the farm but you the farmer? This is also why you have a management team to help bring you leadership in various areas of your farming operation. If you don’t have the answers to difficult questions, consult your team. That is what they are there for. You as the tenant are equipped to manage the land you are renting and if you lack something, work with people who can fill that void. Do the things that you do well and then surround yourself with the team who will make you better. This management philosophy is not a sign of weakness but of maturity and wisdom. Many great leaders have had this in common.
So back to the question of “is Bird Dog a farm management company?”
Absolutely not. We are here to help high-quality growers market themselves and connect with good landowners. We will leave the farm management to the one who knows the farm best, you, the farmer. We will do what we do well, which is to help you grow. You can do what you do well, which is everything else. We know you can do it!
I have already started the Bird Doggin’ for some growers even before our app is up and running. If you are interested in getting started, feel free to contact me at [email protected]
